Oh No They Di'nt!

SPOILER ALERT:  Do not read unless you have read page 1 in Chapter 9 of Into the Wilderness.

So far...

Elizabeth is very cool...to a point.  After that point, she gets on my last nerve.  Girl...speak UP!  Or DON'T!  But for love of god - make up your spinster-assed MIND.  Her brain works a lot like mine...and I think that's why she drives me insane.  Going, going, going...thought after ridiculous thought.  And seriously, has she never had a conversation with a male before?  She's what - 29 years old...and NO ONE has ever made advances toward her?  I can't believe that.  I won't believe that.

I must believe that?

Now...Nathaniel...hmmm.....boyfriend is a different story, entirely.  I'm behind pretty much everything that comes out of his sarcastic mouth.  I dig sarcasm in a male hero, when it's coupled with swooning, googley eyes.  Yessir.

Now Julian? Yeah.  I hate him because I'm supposed to hate him.  He's a douche.  Although I think he's got a few good deeds up his sleeve.  Maybe I'm wrong.  We'll see.

And you know what's on my nerves today?  "Oh...Curiosity and her daughters aren't our slaves or anything...but they sho' can serve us dinner on Christmas day...mmmm hmmm.  Sho can".

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?  It's CHRISTMAS!!!  If they're not your slaves...how's about giving them a DAMNED DAY OFF ON CHRISTMAS?!?

Sorry - residuals from just finishing "The Help".  I am still angry.

OK - off to read...this book is addicting.  Damnit.

  3. Dammit! Why did I return this book to the library yesterday? I'm dying to know exactly where you are. I guess I'm going back there tomorrow to get it.

P.S. Jennifer J. is going to freak OUT about this!

  4. OOOOOOOOOOOO MYYYYYYYY WORD!!!

(Hidly, I wrote that before I even read your last post!! You know me tooooooo well!)

I just turned supper off so I can read this...........so what if supper is late.......again.

    Carol,
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am on book 5. I haven't seen my family in weeks (ha). I spend more time with my ITW sponsor (Hildy) than anyone else. Yes, I looooooooove this series.

I've wanted to reread the first book since I was half way through book 1! Uhhhhhhh!!!!!

  5. LOL Jennifer J!!

I needed to go and get Jennifer J. cause I knew she would LOVE this.

BTW, I rarely thought of Outlander when I read this series. I enjoyed it on its own merits. I'm glad you find it addicting already. I loved it so much that I'm mentoring Cari and Jennifer J. You might need to have a guest blogger cause the emails that they've sent me are HILARIOUS!

I also loved that it was simpler writing. It doesn't mean that it doesn't tell a great story.

  6. Hildy,
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, I never thought that my emails would come back to haunt me! You should post different ones we've sent........I'd love to hear how the other's made fools of themselves. (I seem to remember mine were all very mature, well thought out commentaries. Right? Ha, not.)

  7. Correction. I am just starting book 4, right Hildy? You must correct me when I'm being stupid.........

    ReplyDelete
  8. Well, Jennifer J. you told me to...

You're about to start Book 5, but I'm not really keeping track. lol

  9. Ok,
as for E., she grew up with 3 prettier cousins(with big dowries)and an over-bearing Aunt.
I think E. would have rocked-out in a different household (and a big dowry wouldn't have hurt either). She is pretty, smart, and knows exactly how she wants to live the rest of her life. (Until she meets Nathaniel, of course.) I think her intelligence and her level of self-assurance probably intimidated any guy of that era (not to mention turned them off).

    Nathaniel is hot. nuff said.

I read The Help too. It took me fa'ever to finish it, but it was a good, eye opening book. I still think about some of the scenes. (I'll never look at a toilet the same way)
That is one difficult part of ITW for me. Curiosity is "free"..........really? But SD had to be historically correct. Doesna mean we have to like it, I guess. I love Curiosity. I mean I really love Curiosity. She is one smart cookie.

  10. Hildy,
see? What would I do without you?
    thanks.

  11. I bought the whole "nobody's ever hit on Elizabeth" thing. I'm not sure why. She was just giving off a different 'vibe' I think. :)

Re: Curiosity's freedom, well...I just finished reading The Book of Negroes/Someone Knows My Name (depending on what country you're in) and trust me, Curiosity is free. Some people just have really crappy hours. :) It seems that sometimes there wasn't such a big difference between being free and being a slave but she definitely had more freedom for the time period.

    I'm not sure what you'd do without me, Jennifer J. ;) {Hugs}

  12. "Some people just have really crappy hours."

Ha, you can say that again!! I see what you mean.

    Carol,
I asked Hildy and Cari who they thought Nat looked like. I think they came up with some interesting ideas. What are your thoughts? You are so good at putting faces to characters.

  13. Jennifer J - I am so HAPPY you asked that! I was reading last night and totally clueless about what he looks like!! Last night's chapter said he had a long, thick ponytail...but that's it.

SO here is my question: Does he have straight hair that's all in the ponytail? Or are pieces falling out because it's wavy? I want pieces falling out because the long, straight ponytail seems very Native American to me...and even though his wife's family is Native American, he is not. His father's kin were English and his mother was Scottish.

I am going to look for some "Carol Likey" photos and post them.

Can't remember - what color are his eyes?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Oh good! I'm glad I wasn't the only one who had trouble picturing him.

Yes, I think his hair was straight and in a ponytail........and his eyes were brown (he can see in the dark verra well). Right Hildy?

We can share our interpretations with you. But I want to see what you come up with first!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I can't wait to see who you come up with Carol, but I have a couple of ideas. Am I allowed to say yet?

    ReplyDelete
  16. What freaking colour are his eyes??!!! I can't believe that I don't know this! Am I going to have to return my "Hot 4 Nat" title?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yippee! I'm going to have to read it again and follow along with your blog.
Hazel or gray eyes I think. I don't think they were brown. Was he tall? I got Joe Manganiello on the brain lately. And no chest hair.

  19. When she first meets him

    "dark brows over hazel eyes..."

"wearing feathers in their unbound hair"

  20. I actually pictured him looking a lot like Young Ian. Tall, lithe, long hair, tan from all that time outdoors. What's interesting is both Nathaniel and Ian are Scottish yet see themselves as Native Americans for different reasons of course. Yet another comparison I make between the books! lol

  21. It's hard for me not to picture him as Daniel Day Lewis from Last of the Mohicans. Now, I know that he was Hawkeye's character and not Nathaniel but SD always mentions how he looks like his father. Also, I kinda pictured Jennifer Aniston's boyfriend at times, except not when he's creepy looking. :) He's got that strong, dark look to him. I picture Nathaniel to be tall, lean but muscular but not skinny. I picture Young Ian to be tall and skinny. Maybe I'm thinking back to when he was 15. lol.

  22. Melody, ooohhh thank you. Hazel eyes. Nice.

  23. This whole discussion about what Nat looks like was one of the problems I had with the writing. Gabaldon draws her characters so well, I feel like I'm watching a movie as I read her books because I have such a vivid idea of each person. Not so with these people - I never understood what anyone looks like really, just very vague ideas to me. It made it very hard for me to *believe* in them if you know what I mean. At one point it mentioned something about Nathaniel's earring and I was like..wait..what?...he wears an earring??? Had to go back and find it was mentioned once so briefly I must have missed it.

  24. I don't think I had a hard time picturing the characters, any more than I usually do. I had a hard time picturing Alexander in TBH until I saw an actor recommended. I had the hardest time with Jamie Fraser even though he was described quite clearly. He did not seem good looking to me at all. Then I saw a few pictures and I could finally see it. I'm not good at visualizing faces. I always need a suggestion.

  25. Julia,
I understand what you are saying. SD is not DG or PSimons. Interestingly enough DG does highly recommend ITW. Have you read Diana's blurb about it?

That said, this book had me completely obsessed by the first page.

    Hildy,
you are right about Jamie! I was so clueless on my first read of Outlander.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm only on CHP. 1, but @ Brandy, yes! I'm totally picturing Young Ian, "Echo" version. And I'm really hoping Nathaniel and Elizabeth will play out like my head version of Ian and Rachel... 'Cuz I love me some young Ian. Mmmphm!
    :)

    Who is your Nathaniel?

    ReplyDelete
  33. lol I canna keep a straight face...

I'm still going with Daniel Day Lewis in Last of the Mohicans. Although Nathaniel has morphed a bit in my head since I first started the series to suit my preferences. DDL was a good starting point though. ;-)

    Sincerely yours,
